Context

“Peste du Petit Ruminant” (PPR), also known as sheep and goat plague, is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus in the Morbillivirus genus, belonging to the paramyxoviridae family. The disease currently affects nearly 70 countries. The worldwide population of small ruminant livestock is estimated at 2.1 billion animals, with annual losses due to PPR estimated at between $1.4 billion and $2.1 billion. The OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) jointly developed a Global Strategy for the Control and Eradication of PPR. Vaccination campaigns are planned in that context. The Global Eradication Program includes about $500 million in vaccine purchases.

Benefits

Producing a DIVA (“Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals”) vaccine to distinguish infected animals from vaccinated animals would be useful at all stages of the eradication effort. It is considered as a key part of the Global Eradication Program.

Applications
